![]() A lot of business owners have no interest in the fish, as someone said, it’s only “a 15 cent Goldfish!” They are a dime a dozen to owners of big box stores. I don’t know why beginners don’t want to believe the people with experience, but choose to believe the seller, whose only interest is the money. Partial water changes and a larger tank is usually what is needed, not medication. Many people come here to MAC saying their fish is sick, when all it is, is the tank is too small to hold them and their fishy friends, with their huge waste output. The sellers are probably making just as much or more, by selling bowls or 10 gal tanks a dozen times a day, than they would one by selling one 50 gal a day.if you get my point? Hundreds of people a day believe that and buy a tiny, cute baby Goldfish with a bowl, or a 10 gal tank to put it in. So the sellers make you believe that Goldfish can live in a 10 gal tank, and you leave with a Goldfish or two, and a 10 gal tank or even smaller. A lot of people can’t even put out that kind of money for a tank, so they might leave the store. They’re not going to tell you the fish needs a 50 to 75 gal tank, because most people don’t have the room for such a large piece of furniture, so they will be turned off and leave the store. If your fish hasn’t died yet, you think it’s sick, so you come to the store and they sell you medicines that might not even help money in their pocket. You didn’t know this so your fish dies in that small bowl or tank, and you might come back and buy another fish, hence keeping money in the seller’s pocket. ![]() The larger the tank, the larger the water volume, and the more waste it can hold keeping them healthy until you can do your regular weekly or twice weekly, water changes. This is why you need large tanks, with large filters, to deal with this huge amount of waste, and also need large water changes. They are being poisoned by their own waste. In small tanks, with not enough partial water changes, your fish get sick. They digest food quickly and they expel it quickly so waste builds up very fast. So they market them that way with pictures of Goldfish in bowls, just so the seller can make a buck.ĭid you you know that Goldfish don’t have stomachs like other fish, so they can’t store food for very long? Once swallowed, the food moves quickly through their intestines, being digested very fast (in one end, out the other). Somewhere down the road, someone decided they could make money if you the buyer, believed that Goldfish could live in a small tank. They become stunted and probably won’t live to their potential of over 20 yrs. This is not really healthy for a naturally fast growing fish, to unnaturally slow down. They will grow in the right environment to over a foot long! They grow quite quickly, but growth slows down when the tank is too small. These Common Goldfish were bred for ponds of say 500 gals approx. A 30 gal tank is minimum for a Fancy Goldfish, those with the double tail but a 40 gal would be better. Someone on the thread said a Common Goldfish needs a 30 gal tank. After a few back and forths, I ended with this: ![]() I felt that the problem with the Tropical fish was that it was in too small of a tank with a too many Goldfish. The question was not about the Goldfish, but about a Tropical fish in the tank. I just find it hard to understand when people come for help, they don’t want to receive it. Thought I’d make this a Blog after posting it as an answer to a question.just my thoughts. ![]()
